How can I use One Step GPS to improve vehicle and asset security?
One Step GPS provides real-time visibility of every vehicle and every
asset all the time. Track any vehicle or unpowered asset from a single
dashboard.
With the One Step GPS platform and devices, theft and misuse can be
detected and resolved faster than ever before. Many of our customers
report recovering stolen vehicles and assets within hours.
Our devices alert you immediately when tampered with. You can also
customize additional alerts for after-hours use, operation outside defined
boundaries, and departure from approved routes. These kinds of alerts can
create an entirely new layer of safety and lead to rapid resolution when
something is stolen or misused.
Whatever alerts you set up can be received through the app, to your phone,
or your email. Alert as many people as you need to to be immediately aware
of any unusual activity.
With all these features, One Step GPS is integral to securing your
fleet.
STL Design and Build reports:
"Our Company have been customers and users of the One Step system for
about a year now.
It has enabled us to track our vehicles and trailers 24/7, as well as
monitor the speeds of drivers, locations, etc.
It also assisted in the recovery of one of our vehicles that was stolen
during overnight hours. One Step found the location of the vehicle within
minutes, so we could notify the authorities, and retrieve the vehicle 5
minutes after."
How can One Step GPS help me recover stolen vehicles, equipment and assets?
Our platform alerts you immediately if suspicious behavior is detected.
Driving after hours or outside usual routes can trigger an alert sent to
your phone, email, and app. You can notify as many people as you like.
Once you're aware that a vehicle or asset is missing, you can follow its
movement in real time and share its exact location with the police for a
rapid recovery.
The devices are discrete, easily hidden, and almost indistinguishable from
OEM parts, so they're very difficult for thieves to find and remove.
If a device is discovered and tampered with, you'll receive an immediate
alert. The backup batteries in each device mean it will continue
broadcasting its location to your platform even when disconnected.
We have devices for tracking any type of vehicle or asset for a complete
mixed-fleet solution—heavy equipment, machinery, vans, cars, trucks, etc.
We can protect all of your most valuable assets and give you peace of
mind.
Here are two stories from One Step GPS customers that highlight how we've
helped them combat theft:
"Two weeks after I installed this product in all of our fleet vehicles one
of our trucks was stolen from our office.
I was told it was missing, pulled up the information on One Step GPS,
called the police to come pick me up so we could go recover the
vehicle.
I was able to return the vehicle to the office within three hours of its
reported missing.
I was able to offer the police officer a full report on where the vehicle
went the entire time it was gone, along with the video footage from our
cameras that caught the picture of the guy that took it for the joy
ride.
Saved us thousands of dollars. Saved our company from filing an insurance
claim. Made the police officer smile and do extra patrols still to this
day because we were able to assist them. Made us happy that the service
worked and continues to work for our company daily." — Misty E.

"We had issues with theft of equipment from our property, and used the One
Step system for a unique tracking setup.
The sales staff were very helpful, explained exactly what we needed, and
had us up and running within a few days.
In one year the system paid for itself 5 times over.
We caught one theft as it was happening, the web interface led directly to
site of the stolen property, with a breadcrumb trail all the way to the
building the stolen property was located in.
They also recovered previously stolen equipment from the same search. We
took two criminals off the street, and recovered thousands in stolen
property. We are adding the system to more of our high-dollar assets this
year. It is hands down both the easiest and most affordable GPS tracking
system I've seen."
How do I prevent theft of trailers or unpowered assets?
We have solutions to track any trailer or asset and report the exact
location to you at any time.
Receive immediate alerts by text, email, and in the app when a trailer or
asset is moved out of defined areas (geofencing) or travels after usual
hours.
You'll receive the real-time location of the asset, be able to see it on
your phone, laptop, or desktop. You can immediately report the theft to
police along with all relevant information for speedy recovery.
Don P. tells us:
"At one point we had a piece of equipment stolen. The support and service
One Step GPS rendered to not only myself but the police department was
instrumental in not only recovering my equipment but also assisted in the
police discovering a "chop shop" where several arrests were made and
several autos recovered."
How common is fleet vehicle and asset theft?
While there's no one definitive answer to that question, let's consider
some of the best available research on the subject:
Commercial vehicles
The California Highway Patrol published vehicle theft data for the state
of California. The report shows that in 2020, 6% of all vehicle thefts
were commercial vehicles.
The same report shows a total of 194.876 vehicle thefts in 2021. If the
percentage of commercial vehicles stayed the same year over year, then in
2021, there were an estimated 11,693 commercial vehicle thefts, which
amounts to approximately 32 per day in the state of CA alone.
Cargo
The FBI has estimated total cargo theft costs nationwide amount to as much
as $30B in losses annually.
CargoNet (an association of cargo carriers joined to help one another
fight cargo theft) reported 692 thefts among its members, a 59% increase
in cargo theft last year compared to the year before. The total theft
reported had a value of $31.1M.
Equipment theft
According to a joint 2016 report by the National Equipment Register (NER)
and the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), there were approximately
12,056 equipment theft reports nationwide.
The total value of stolen assets was projected to be as high as $1B.
A remarkably low recovery rate (21%) for stolen equipment means
significant potential losses when your company experiences this. Using GPS
can greatly increase this for a small cost, which pays for itself in many
more ways than one.
Which pieces of equipment are most often targetted for theft?
In North America, the five most stolen pieces of equipment are:
- Skid steer loaders
- Backhoe loaders
- Excavators
- Mini excavators
- Dozers
According to Construction Briefing, a leading publication for the
construction industry.
The same report lists the five most stolen brands:
- John Deere
- Kubota
- Caterpillar
- Bobcat
- Case
One Step GPS provides solutions to track all powered and unpowered assets
for a total mixed-fleet solution.
Has One Step GPS recovered stolen vehicles and equipment?
Yes, numerous of our customers have reported the recovery of stolen
vehicles and assets. Here are a few of their stories:
"Van was stolen, police were able to recover it with help of hidden GPS

"Within 1 hour of installing it in our company delivery vehicle we were
able to confirm our suspicions of wasted time and missing product. A
delivery 6 miles south of our company resulted in a 40 mile trip north to
a very bad area and then after stops at a Burger king, McDonalds and
Dunkin Donuts, our delivery truck then traveled to and parked at a closed
park for a half hour which allowed us the time to drive to the location
and relieve the driver of his duties and retrieve a number of stolen
computers that should not have been in with our other hardware deliveries.
Thank you for the awesome product. Within an hour you saved us almost $10K
in product we didn't know was removed from the warehouse." — John M.

"Tracked down a stolen van live with dispatch, awesome!" — Dan J.

"Our company has been with one step for awhile. We had a vehicle stolen
from our technicians house. With Adams help we were able to recover our
vehicle, and supply the police with a detailed time line and location the
vehicle was used. Without their product, it would have cost a lot of time
and money and may still be in limbo!" — Lynn B.

"One Step GPS assisted in the recovery of one of our vehicles that was
stolen during overnight hours. While our cameras caught the person who
took the vehicle, One Step found the location of the vehicle within
minutes, so we could notify the authorities, and retrieve the vehicle 5
minutes after location.
We are now expanding our fleet, and every new vehicle and trailer will
have a One Step attached to it. Our insurance is lower, because of One
step, so the monthly costs are extremely equitable." — Linny D.

"I was able to retrieve my vehicle. The police department didn't want to
do anything to help me find it. Without the GPS I don't think I would
have. I was able to tell the police where it was and got my car back
within hours of it being taken." — Joanne B.

"In 2022, one of our business trucks was stolen from a job site. Thanks to
the GPS from Onestep, we were able to safely recover the vehicle. This is
after several county changes and a state change in live time to track it."
— Laura F.

"This morning I came to the office and was told that our F450 is not in
the parking lot. I was able to check on the truck through the online
system and sure enough I was able to see where the truck was parked. I
called 911, filed a report, officer was at the office before I was off the
phone with 911. The officer took the location I was able to provide her
and had an officer from that town recover the vehicle. She gave me a ride
to the secured vehicle and lucky enough for us everything was still in
great shape. Thank you to Arlington and Marysville WA Police Department.
We were able to recover the vehicle within an hour of finding out it was
missing! Using the OneStepGPS.com system has not only been the most
affordable on the market, in less than a month it has saved us a lot of
heartache and time in recovery of our vehicle. I was able to tell the
owner of the company the exact time the vehicle was stolen. This made
recovering the security video footage flawless." — Misty E.
Can I get alerts if equipment is moved outside of work hours?
Yes!
Set alerts customized to your operating schedule and receive instant
notifications by text, email, and in-app whenever equipment is moved
outside those hours.
Terri I. tells us:
"They were so easy to install and they keep very accurate detail of where
our technicians are going all day.
I love how I can map their routes and help provide better time tracking of
our service calls. I wish I had found these a year ago, because it would
have helped me with a dishonest employee and his falsifying time cards.
It has alerts that text us when the vans are drove after hours and on the
weekends, and the mobile app is just as wonderful as the website."
Can I get alerts if equipment is moved outside of a certain location?
Yes!
Set geofenced areas and receive instant notifications by text, email, and
in-app whenever equipment is moved outside those boundaries.
Bob S. tells us:
"Absolutely love this system! It enables me to see where my drivers are at
any given minute and provides feedback regarding their driving habits.
When I get notification that one of my drivers is exceeding speed limits,
is performing harsh braking/acceleration, or is outside our 'geofence', I
can contact the driver and correct his actions immediately. There are many
attributes that help, including live traffic, to keep my drivers on route
and on time."
What are some of the ways thieves check to see if a tracker is in a vehicle?
Thieves will sometimes leave a stolen vehicle or equipment in a parking
lot. If it's still there after a few days, they know there is no tracker
and take it from there.
Other ways thieves search include looking in common spots for GPS
installations. However, with a little work, you can make your installation
look OEM and very hard to find.
Some fleets place two trackers on each vehicle or asset: a plugin tracker
and a battery-powered tracker; if the thief finds one and removes it, they
don't suspect a second.
We have recovered plugin devices while still in vehicles in chop shops,
which shows how difficult they can be to identify.
Our devices all have tamper alerts and battery backups; if removed, the
device will send an instant notification via text, email, or the app. If
the thief leaves it in the vehicle, disconnected, you can still track
their location.
If I already have insurance why would I also use GPS Tracking to protect and recover my vehicles, trailers and equipment?
There are many hidden costs to vehicle theft that insurance does not
reflect in a payout.
The administrative hours spent documenting and reporting a theft, working
with the police to file a report, coordinating with the insurance company,
filling forms and filing legal documents, and finding and purchasing a
replacement are work hours you'll never recoup.
Often, a stolen car can wind up in an impound lot where fees can quickly
accumulate; insurance companies generally do not cover this cost.
It's also possible for your insurance premiums to increase, and often a
theft on a vehicle history report can reduce its resale value
significantly.
Lastly, the hours your vehicle is not in the field or on the road are
hours you can't service clients and can't bill for. If clients expect
service you're unable to provide, they can lose confidence in you,
potentially losing business and referrals.
Lastly, the recovery rate on non-vehicle assets hovers around 23%,
according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). If your
equipment, trailers, and other non-powered assets are tracked, you can
prevent misplacement, unnecessary downtime, and lost revenue while
minimizing wasted time spent collecting insurance payouts and replacing
stolen equipment.
For all these reasons, the minor costs of tracking your vehicles can
quickly pay for themselves.
